Summary
Carbon black is a high purity colloidal carbon produced in large quantities world-wide for myriad industrial and consumer applications. Commercial carbon black differs in important respects from soots and other environmental carbonaceous particles but it is useful as an idealized model for investigating the adsorption properties, atmospheric reactions, and to a lesser extent, the environmental effects of these materials.
The toxicology of carbon black and related particulate carbons is examined in depth, with emphasis on major routes of exposure (e.g. inhalation). The absence of significant acute health effects is noted and the potential for chronic health effects is considered, particularly in regard to the fate of carbon particles in vivo and the bioavailability of strongly adsorbed trace organic impurities on carbon black.
Human exposure to carbon black dust occurs mainly in the workplace. The results of pertinent industrial hygiene surveys, and clinical and epidemiologic studies of occupationally exposed workers are summarized and evaluated.
