Peterchens Mondfahrt and His Journey Through Media

Abstract

Peterchens Mondfahrt (Little Peter’s Journey to the Moon/Peter and Anneli’s Journey to the Moon/Peter in Magicland) is one of the most popular German stage productions for children. It depicts the adventurous journey of two siblings and an anthropomorphized cockchafer to the moon, where the companions hope to regain the beetle’s sixth leg. The play premièred in 1911; the script was first published in 1912. Since then, the story has undergone many transformations. Sometimes the whole story was adapted into a different medium, while at other times only single narremes were transformed. This article explores the transformations of Peterchens Mondfahrt published, shown or broadcast between 1911 and 1945. It raises the question how the different versions of Peterchens Mondfahrt are linked to each other. In doing so, it examines different possibilities of describing these connections and questions the applicability of existing terminologies such as media network (Medienverbund), multimedia franchise, commercial supersystem and rhizome. As all of these might function as combining points, the article touches aspects of popularity, mediality, sensuality, economy, time and space. In the end, the article argues that already existing terms are not able to describe the connections between the different Peterchens Mondfahrt versions (Peterchens Mondfahrten) sufficiently. Thus, this text argues for a differentiated terminology and hence for a distinction between direct and indirect as well as retrospective and prospective media networks.

    In the 1970/1980s, the quantity of literary criticism regarding Peterchens Mondfahrt increased (cf. Schedler 1972; Jahnke 1977; Bauer 1980; cf. also Ewers 2008). Apart from the aforementioned contributions by Ewers, there has hardly been any research on Peterchens Mondfahrt in the twenty-first century (Steinlein 2008, for example, is an exception). However, the literarische Stoff is always mentioned in all relevant introductions as well as relevant handbooks and encyclopaedias.

    Gerdt von Bassewitz’s second children’s book Pips der Pilz (1916) is similar to Peterchens Mondfahrt. It also narrates a journey, employs a fairy, and contains the themes of nature and Christmas.

In this article I am not concerned with a detailed discussion of the term media network in general, which is why the research situation on the media network is not presented here in full detail, which also helps to avoid redundancies within the volume. Instead, the focus is on the question of the applicability of the term in relation to the specific material before me. Of further interest is the question of how and by what the individual elements are connected with each other.

    Today the term rhizome is mostly used to describe hypertextuality. Even though I will work with this term in the following, I would like to note that I am critical of it in two respects: On the one hand, from my point of view it is always problematic to use terms from biology to describe cultural aspects. Secondly, the term has meanwhile moved far away from its original use by Deleuze and Guattari, who used it primarily in the context of cognitive processes and knowledge systems.

    The publishing house Hermann Klemm had its own station at the exhibition in the section Das illustrierte Buch (the illustrated book), where, in addition to Baluschek’s pictures, illustrations by Otto Engel for Grüner Heinrich, Walter Klemm for Don Quixot and Ekkehard, and others were on display (Grosse Berliner Ausstellung 1924, 86). Baluschek was also in the room Filmkunst. Entwürfe und Modelle and with his picture Großstadt in the section Verein Berliner Künstler. The film is likely to be the Zille film Mutter Krausens Fahrt ins Glück (1929), which was under the protectorate of Käthe Kollwitz and Hans Baluschek (cf. Gandert 1993). Baluschek was a co-founder of the Bund für proletarische Literatur (League for Proletarian Literature) and on the film review committee.
