Abstract
Transgressions in art are crossings of frontiers that can radically change the familiar as part of a process of innovation. If a collective is able to accept artistic irritatants, these extreme impulses can result in a shift of aesthetic norms. Examples from Antiquity demonstrate that such aesthetic transgressions can include various types, such as provocative themes, modern painting techniques, new colours or different ways of expression. Transgressive impulses occur mostly in intervals, allowing recipients to accept them and the resulting shift of aesthetic norms. Transgressive periods are especially evident in the development of Greek painting, whose artistic innovations are accompanied by political or social change. Illustrated exemplars from Egypt and China impressively show that transgressive impulses may lead into a shift of norms, for example, when they occur too abruptly or are connected to a certain person whose historical memory is fading after death.

Assembled statues are already documented from the reign of Amenophis III, the father of Akhenaten, whereby some finds even seem to originate from the time of Tutmosis IV, the grandfather of Akhenaten. The method was then further refined in the Amarna period, when all body parts were made separately. Cf. Thompson 2012, 164.
