Zusammenfassung
Die Aussicht des eigenen Todes, das Sterben – das eigene und dasjenige anderer Menschen – sowie der Verlust einer Person durch den Tod gehören zu den elementaren Erfahrungen des Menschen. Ob als Gesunder, der über seine Lebenszeit hinausdenkt, als Todkranker oder als Angehöriger eines solchen, als Hinterbliebener, als Heilkundiger oder Priester – Sterben, Tod und Trauer haben die Menschheit seit jeher beschäftigt, und dies hat seinen Niederschlag in Kunst, Musik und Dichtung gefunden (s. Kap. 37: »Tod und Sterben in der Bildenden Kunst«). In jüngerer Zeit und auf einer wissenschaftlichen Ebene haben sich vornehmlich Philosophie, Medizin, Psychologie und Soziologie der Todesthematik angenommen.
