Definitions
According to the European Union Commission, genetically modified organism (GMO) has been defined as an organism (excluding human beings) in which the genetic material has been changed in a way that could not be obtained by reproductive or other naturally occurring recombination (The EU legislation on GMO 2010). In more colloquial terms, any organism (excluding human beings) that carries one or more genes which originated in an unrelated organism (like virus, bacteria, plant, or animal) is a transgenic organism or GMO. Another way to define GMO is as an organism (excluding human beings) in which the genetic material has been changed using genetic engineering technology.
