Abstract
Kidney transplantation is associated with improved survival and quality of life for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Due to the shortage of donor kidneys, the waitlist for kidney transplantation is long, and most patients with ESRD tend to need dialysis as a bridge for kidney transplantation. This chapter will review the characteristics of ESRD patients on peritoneal dialysis (HD) and hemodialysis (HD) and explore whether differences in modalities or patient features contribute to the differences if any, in rates of transplantation and transplant outcomes for these patients.
