Abstract
Cognitive, executive, and motor dysfunctions are widely regarded as the hallmarks of neurodegeneration. However, behavioral and mental disorders are highly present in these conditions, affecting to a great extent all patients’ outcomes. These changes include mood-, hyperactivity-, and psychosis-related symptoms, among others, with apathy being the most prevalent behavioral alteration. Each symptom is characterized by distinct epidemiological, clinical, and neuroimaging features, implying unique underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Their causes are suggested to be rooted in several biological, psychological, and social factors. Management of these changes should preferably include nonpharmacologic treatments, whereas pharmacologic agents are used as second line therapy. In conclusion, behavioral and psychological changes are currently considered an integral part of neurodegeneration and should not be overlooked by researchers, clinicians, and caregivers, in the shadow of cognitive decline and motor abnormalities.
