Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to describe the management of nanomaterials released into the environment. In the recent past, nanomaterials have become a popular alternative as advanced materials for novel applications; however, little consideration has been given to their potential hazards to humans and their impact on the environment. Due to their small size and high degree of reactivity, they offer potential risks to health and to the environment. The risks due to inhalation, dermal exposure, or ingestion will be discussed and reviewed. A primary factor influencing the ignition sensitivity and explosive violence of a dust cloud is the particle size or specific surface area. As the particle size decreases, the specific surface area increases. This chapter focuses on the identification of major sources of nanowastes, their associated toxicity, and their quantitative risk assessment analysis.
