Abstract

We have examined ways of legitimizing usages i.e. places in modern or contemporary literature where one could observe a preliminary study of the status, role and legitimacy of usages. Such preliminary efforts to conceptualize usages were identified in the works of authors as different as Hume, Burke or Hayek. With Hume, usage acquired its legitimacy as an internal acquired faculty crucial for the good functioning of the society; with Hayek , as the basis of something like an institution; with Burke , as the gardian of continuity which was not a reaction, but to the contrary, what could allow some form of continuity between past, present and future.
