Definition

Inflammatory bowel diseases include Crohn’s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and inflammatory bowel disease unclassified, a disease with features of both CD and UC. These are chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases of unknown etiology, characterized by episodes of remissions and relapses. The peak incidence of IBD occurs at 15–25 years of age, and 30% of the patients are diagnosed before age 21 (Karwowski et al. 2009; Stenson 2008).

As UC affects the rectum and a variable extent of the colon, CD can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract. In UC, the most pronouncing symptom is diarrhea that is often associated with rectal bleeding and abdominal cram** during bowel movements. Systemic symptoms, such as weight loss,...
