Abstract
A genre of urban satire, English early modern city comedies are irrevocably intertwined with the city of London. These comedies were products of and meditations on London’s rapid growth and its consequent geographical and social changes. This entry considers the ways in which English early modern city comedies treated themes such as money, class, prostitution and foreigners, treating the works of authors such as Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, John Marston, Thomas Dekker, and John Webster.
