Abstract

Welfens continues the discussion which started in the previous chapter by exploring in more depth the change in US policy under Trump. The benefits of EU, as an institution for international cooperation, illustrate why multilateralism is a preferable approach to bilateralism and the destabilization which would follow the disintegration of the European Union, or other regional integration clubs, and the weakening of international organizations including North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the World Trade Organization. Welfens asks the question of whether the benefits to the UK of a UK–US trade agreement would outweigh the costs from the fall-out effects of playing a supportive role to the US in its new approach.
