Associative learning

Definition

An association refers to a connection between concepts, ideas, events, and mental states. Associations usually develop through specific experiences or observations. Associations first became a philosophical topic with Plato and Aristotle in 350 BCE. Later, the English empiricists revived the idea and applied it to their explanations of behavior, thought, and memory. In modern psychology, associations play a role in Pavlovian and operant conditioning (aka instrumental learning). The ability to form associations between neutral stimuli and biologically relevant stimuli or events was likely a key behavioral influence in early evolution. Associative learning has been established across a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates. More recently, the study of associative mechanisms has been extended to include connectionist neural networks and modern cognitive and behavioral neuroscience.
