Abstract

Dioxopiperazines have three regioisomeric forms (1–3) which are derived from fundamentally different bond-disconnection precursors. The 2,3-dioxopiperazines (1) may be viewed as resulting from reaction of a disubstituted ethylenediamine and an α-dicarbonyl fragment such as oxalate. 2,5-Dioxopiperazines (2) are cyclodipeptides obtained via condensation of two α-amino acids. 2,6-Dioxopiperazines (3) may be viewed as cyclized imide derivatives of the corresponding di(carboxymethyl)amines. Hopefully, this review shall serve investigators not only as a summary of important progress, but as a catalyst for new biomedical research initiatives involving one or more classes of these interesting heterocycles.
