Definition

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a term that covers a group of interrelated heterogeneous diseases that share the characteristic of axial engagement, asymmetric oligoarthritis, and enthesitis and are seronegative for rheumatoid factor (Gran and Skomsvoll 1997; van der Linden and van der Heijde 1998). The most relevant immunogenetic feature is the remarkable familiar aggregation and the association with the histocompatibility antigen, HLA-B27 (González-Roces and Alvarez 1996).

The concept of SpA has been gradually developed throughout the last 30 years. At present, it includes different conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS), reactive arthritis (ReA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and the juvenile forms of each of these...
