Neuropsychological Interventions for Children - Volume 2

Abstract

Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects intellectual functions and adaptive behavior. The chapter discusses the importance of early intervention for children with IDD and presents different therapeutic approaches. Behavior analytic interventions, such as contingency management and parent training, are effective for children with IDD. These approaches aim to promote adaptive behaviors and reduce problem behaviors through reinforcement and modeling of desirable behaviors. Cognitive stimulation programs have varied results, but those that emphasize metacognitive strategies are the most promising. These strategies help children develop skills in self-regulation, planning, monitoring, and evaluating their thinking and cognitive performance. Neuropsychological interventions have shown significant improvements in cognitive and adaptive performance in children with IDD. The chapter presents a clinical case that exemplifies the interventions performed on a child with IDD. The interventions included cognitive approaches focused on attention and executive function difficulties, as well as behavioral techniques such as parent training, and contingency management. The chapter highlights the importance of interventions that use metacognitive strategies in the cognitive and behavioral development of children with IDD. These approaches provide positive long-term results, promoting autonomy and adaptation of children with IDD in different aspects of daily life.
