Abstract
This chapter provides students with background information about the evolution of student support services in higher education. Students, whether online or face-to-face, require ongoing and efficient access to support services and resources. Students also have unique needs that may necessitate additional guidance and support. Misguided or unsupported students are less likely to remain enrolled in an online course or program. Student services may include academic support (i.e., tutoring, research), academic advisement, admissions, career services, campus ministries, service learning, counseling, financial aid, student discipline, wellness programs, retention programs, and student activities. Such services, along with other resources, are often adapted specifically for virtual access and use by online students. Thus, this chapter describes the various services and resources that may be available to an online student and provides recommendations for student access and use. Through this chapter, students will learn about the positive outcomes they can expect from using the services and resources available to them through their college or university. Finally, students will be provided with information to help them understand the positive correlation between use of services and resources and their overall academic performance in an online course or program. The chapter will conclude by providing encouragement to students to be proactive in the access and use of relevant services and resources provided by the college or university.
