Abstract

This chapter surveys the relation between money and ideation in the writings of two insightful but often overlooked German thinkers of the mid-twentieth century, namely Alfred Sohn-Rethel and Rudolf-Wolfgang Müller. Sohn-Rethel had stressed on numerous occasions that his main target of research was the generic explanation of mental abstraction, especially through the perspective of the development of modern, natural (and social) science. The chapter locates Sohn-Rethel’s philosophical program at the intersection of the post-Kantian materialism of the nineteenth-century and the twentieth-century neo-Kantian emphasis on the constitution of the subject so as to develop a novel materialist account of subjectivity. An examination of the development of Sohn-Rethel’s thought leads to the notion of “real abstraction” in Intellectual and Manual Labour.

The second half of the chapter introduces the works of Rudolf-Wolfgang Müller in and places his own attitudes toward money alongside the thought of Sohn-Rethel. Müller’s main opus, Money and Mind: On the Genetic History of Identity Consciousness and Rationality Since Antiquity, can be conceived as one of the greatest contributions of historical self-reflection of modernity, as it not only reconstructs the material (especially monetary) presuppositions of abstract philosophical thinking in ancient Greece but also examines critically certain basic thinkers of classical and contemporary modernity, such as David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Theodor W. Adorno, Jean Piaget, and Erik Erikson.

This would be also the thrust of one of the first (pejorative) critiques concerning Sohn-Rethel’s book and its “victory parade” through certain parts of the West-German Left; see Bischoff, “Materielle und geistige Produktion.” Sohn-Rethel published an answer to Bischoff in the same year and in the same journal (Sozialistische Politik). Also in the same year, a less passionate but equally sharp critique would be formulated by Helmut Reinicke, who would also stress Sohn-Rethel’s difference from Marx, pointing out that Sohn-Rethel tried to deduce the principle of social “synthesis” from the surface of relations of productions (such as appropriation), whereas Marx based his own presentation on the level of social production. Concerning Sohn-Rethel’s insistence on the formative power of exchange relations for society, Reinicke would talk about “an unhistorical way of examining historical materialism” (“Ware und Dialektik,” 536). Frigga Haug’s critique (“Alfred Sohn-Rethels Revision”) has a similar orientation. On the other hand, one of the first philosophical critiques was formulated by J. Hörisch, who pointed out that Sohn-Rethel ignored one of the main pillars of Kant’s cognitive theory, the schematism, which combines empirical intuition and conceptual abstraction, succumbing thus to the same tautological logic he aimed to criticize (Hörisch, “Identitätszwang und Tauschabstraktion,” 52). Further positive receptions (except the Laudatio of Oscar Negt in 1988), albeit with totally different ways of departure, are those of Smith (“The Value Abstraction”) and Breuer (“Horkheimer oder Adorno”; “Kein Zutritt zum Grand Hotel”; “Differenzen im Paradigmakern”). For further reception (and further bibliography) see the collection of texts edited by R. Heinz and J. Hörisch (Geld und Geltung) Tinguely (“Kant, Marx, and the Money”) and especially Engster (Das Geld als Maß) and Engster and Schröder (“Alfred Sohn-Rethels große Idee”). The bilingual journal Recherches germaniques has published in its fifteenth volume (2020) a series of articles exclusively about Alfred Sohn-Rethel and his project. The multifaceted character of the contributions of this volume can only be mentioned here.
