Abstract

The progression of virtual work has been delineated by technological advancements and global interconnectivity through three historical waves. With an accelerated pace and magnitude of digital transformation, we propose hybrid work as wave four, likely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this wave, organisations are transitioning towards virtual work rapidly. However, this transition occurred without comprehensive understanding of virtual teamwork and hence it lacked strategic planning. This chapter endeavours to synthesise the extensive body of literature pertaining to team virtuality, spanning a timeline of four decades. It specifically addresses the historical evolution of virtual teams, delineates the advantages, and challenges inherent in remote work arrangements. Furthermore, it conducts a detailed exploration of global virtual teams and the context of China. Implications for work–life balance and well-being were also discussed with vital insights for sha** the post-pandemic future of work.
