Abstract
Imagine watching a movie that depicts the history of the expanding universe. If we ran the movie in reverse, we would see the universe contract. Galaxies would merge; matter would become denser and hotter; and—eventually—the universe would appear to converge on an initial state. The discovery of an expanding universe seems to imply the universe had a definite beginning.
