Mindfulness for Children, Adolescents, and Families

Abstract

In this chapter, we delve into the evolution of the concept of mindful parenting and how it has developed over time. We explore the contributions of Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn, Susan Bögels, and others who have significantly shaped our understanding of mindful parenting. Furthermore, we examine the attempts made to operationalize and measure mindful parenting, with a particular focus on the utilization of self-reported measures. Moving forward, we discuss the development and format of MBPs designed specifically for parents. These programs have been implemented to help parents cultivate mindfulness and apply it to their parenting practices. Additionally, we explore the outcomes associated with these programs and their potential benefits for parents and their families. We organize the review into sections that center around different aspects of children’s nature, including children with developmental disabilities, mental health, and social challenges, as well as nonclinical samples. By examining these diverse populations, we gain insights into the potential effectiveness and adaptability of mindful parenting in different circumstances. We conclude the chapter by addressing the issues and challenges that arise in advancing both the practice and research of mindful parenting.
