Abstract

Daylight is crucial for children’s growth, development, and well-being, especially the natural lighting in schools. Natural lighting for school interiors affects children’s eyes, which in turn impacts children’s vision, observation, ability to receive information, and cognitive development. So, the school interior needs to get adequate daylight without neglecting children’s visual comfort. In the final studio of the Interior Design Study Program, the authors had the opportunity to conceptualize and measure passive design application to the interior design of the Dian Harapan School in Karawang, Banten. The authors research the interiors that children use the most, namely classrooms and corridors. Adequacy of natural lighting measurement follows the national standards regarding quality, apertures, obstructions, and light distribution. The natural lighting visual comfort measurement complies with the Ministry of Public Works standards focusing on the views from outside to inside and vice versa. Meanwhile, this visual comfort measurement follows the mechanical and electrical reference: light intensity and room color temperature. At the end of the paper, the authors conclude how daylight, interior design, and children’s well-being in schools intersect.
