Abstract

Aluminum flat products are currently produced by twin-roll casting and direct cooled casting methods. Unlike the direct cooled casting method, the solidification rate is quite high in the twin-roll casting method. Surface defects may occur due to production at high solidification rates and metal feeding at high flow rates. In this study, the formation mechanism of ripple trace, which is one of the surface defects in the twin-roll casting process, was investigated. The differences of the related defect depending on the process parameters (alloy, casting speed, metal level, temperature, etc.) in 15° inclined and horizontal twin-roll casting lines were compared and reduced.
