Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff Konsum wird in verschiedenen akademischen Disziplinen auf unterschiedliche Weise verwendet. Je nach ihrem spezifischen akademischen Hintergrund fragen Wissenschaftler, wie Angebot und Nachfrage, oder anders ausgedrückt: Produktion und Konsum in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft zueinander in Beziehung stehen. Oder sie möchten untersuchen, wie einzelne Menschen oder Gesellschaften ihre Konsumpraktiken realisieren. Diese Konsumpraktiken werden durch unterschiedliche empirische Antworten beleuchtet, die sich darauf beziehen, wie viel Geld Akteure für spezifische Güter und Dienstleistungen ausgeben. Die Konsumforschung untersucht auch die Präferenzstrukturen einzelner Akteure und ihrer Haushalte, die ihr Konsumverhalten bestimmen. Wie konsistent sind Präferenzstrukturen angesichts sich verändernder empirischer Hintergründe von Zeit, Raum und zugehöriger Kultur? Schließlich befasst sich die Konsumforschung auch mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Einkommen und Ausgaben. In den letzten siebzig Jahren hat sich die Konsumforschung in viele verschiedene Richtungen entwickelt, und die aktuelle Konsumforschung wird zunehmend interdisziplinär.
