Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Ecosystems of the North Pacific

Abstract

Some methods to determine total hydrocarbon content (THC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in various components of ecosystems in the Far Eastern region of Russia are considered in this chapter. The general protocol of analysis proposed includes freeze-drying of sample, extraction of target components through ultrasonication, saponification of lipids, and sorbent-based purification with subsequent analysis by the HPLC and IR spectrometry methods. Metrological characteristics of the method are calculated.

Notes

  1. 1.

Filter preparation. The filter housing is made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): the lower part is a funnel lined with a layer of filter paper (white tape) and fat-free cotton wool, overlaid with a PTFE mesh. Then the upper cylindrical part of the filter with a screw thread is screwed into the funnel, tightening and sealing the lower layers.

  2. 2.

Cartridge preparation. The cartridge consists of a polymeric base in the form of a syringe (d = 1 cm, V = 5 cm3) with a glass porous membrane installed in the lower part. A layer of silica gel (100–200 mesh) weighing 1.0 g and a layer of anhydrous sodium sulfate 2.0 g are placed on top of the membrane. The layers are tightly packed and overlaid with a layer of fat-free cotton wool.
