Zusammenfassung
Physisches Altern ist in unserem täglichen Leben präsent, wenn wir in den Spiegel schauen, wenn wir uns über altersbedingte Krankheiten oder den Verlust von körperlicher Stärke sorgen, oder wenn wir Werbung für Anti-Aging-Produkte sehen. Diese Gedanken und Einstellungen haben einen gemeinsamen Fokus auf Rückgang und Verlust, lassen uns aber fragen, was körperliche Entwicklung in der Lebensmitte und im höheren Alter bedeuten kann und wie sie gefördert werden kann. Das vorliegende Kapitel zielt darauf ab, physisches Altern zu definieren und die körperlichen Entwicklungen zu erforschen, die im höheren Alter auftreten können. Darüber hinaus untersucht das Kapitel, wie Einzelpersonen biologisches Altern erleben und bewältigen. In diesem Zusammenhang stellt das Kapitel mehrere Methoden vor, wie man die körperliche Entwicklung im mittleren oder späten Lebensalter messen könnte und überprüft qualitative Daten zu den Perspektiven der Menschen auf altersbedingte körperliche Veränderungen und Gesundheitsprobleme. Anschließend untersucht das Kapitel, wie die körperliche Entwicklung mit anderen Wachstumsbereichen im höheren Alter zusammenhängt (z. B. kognitive, emotionale, soziale, Persönlichkeitsentwicklung). Zuletzt diskutiert das Kapitel, wie ein Ansatz der positiven Psychologie angewendet werden kann, um in die körperliche Entwicklung in der Lebensmitte und im höheren Alter einzugreifen und sie zu gestalten, indem individuelle Stärken erhöht und Entwicklungsressourcen gestärkt werden.
