Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung in jedem Lebensbereich (z. B. physisch, kognitiv, sozial, emotional, Persönlichkeit) beginnt mit einer Bewertung dessen, was wir ändern wollen, wie wir Veränderungen erreichen und wie wir die Erreichung unserer Veränderungsziele messen. In diesem Sinne sind die Definition und Operationalisierung der Entwicklung im mittleren und höheren Alter relevant für die Formulierung von Kriterien für persönliches Wachstum, die Erforschung von Veränderungsprozessen und die Bewertung der Erreichung von Entwicklungszielen. Der erste Teil dieses Kapitels befasst sich mit Fragen wie der Messung der Entwicklung im mittleren und höheren Alter, wie Menschen selbst positives Altern definieren und bewerten und welche Auswirkungen solche Definitionen auf die Bewertung der Entwicklung im Alter haben. Kriterien und Standards zur Bewertung von Selbstverbesserung oder Veränderung werden im Kontext von Alterns- und Entwicklungsrecherchen untersucht. Die Relevanz von Kriterien gegenüber prozessorientierten Theorien des positiven Alterns wird in Bezug auf Entwicklungsfragen analysiert. Im zweiten Teil des Kapitels werden verschiedene quantitative und qualitative Methoden zur Erforschung der Entwicklung im Alter vorgestellt und diskutiert.
