Abstract

Cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE) is one of the outcomes of acute heart failure and is a common reason of critical condition with respiratory distress. Prompt diagnosis and treatment may prevent the main complications. Medical treatment and high-flow oxygen administration are recommended. Patients no responder to conventional therapy required advanced treatment, including inotropes.

Chronic heart failure in children implies the presence of structural remodeling of the heart. Management of these patients is based on the neuro-hormonal inhibition mechanism. Most of the recommendations for chronic pediatric HF therapy were extrapolated from adult heart failure trials. Today new drugs are emerging for chronic heart failure and cardiomyopathies, but for some of them no data are still available in children.
