Abstract
This chapter is the first of two chapters exploring the work of police search and rescue (SAR). Within the pages that follow, we examine the processes that follow the decision to launch a police SAR response, looking at the various tasks, resources, and duties, particularly the SAR activity known as “ground pounding.” We also explore aspects of the behavior of lost persons.
