Abstract
This chapter covers emotional situations that are likely to arise in the story finding and pitching process, namely: excitement, as well as anxiety and the pressure of responsibility that can be induced by finding scoops or being assigned to cover a ‘big story’; anxiety, fear and/or worry in situations in which a journalist does not have a story; as well as emotions of hopefulness and often anxiety about pitch’s reception by editor; and frustration with a rejected pitch. It is suggested that key strategies to manage these emotions include attentional deployment in terms of following practice and training; verbal processing with colleagues and editors; and internal processing practices of perspective-taking and acceptance.
