Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss the physical background beyond the concepts of climate and weather. First, we study the factors affecting the climate at a given point on the Earth’s surface. Then we describe such weather phenomena as clouds, fog, rain, snow, and hail. We also review the manifestations of atmospheric electricity, such as thunder and lightning. The mechanisms of snowflakes formation and their types are discussed, as well as such phenomena as blizzards and snow avalanches in mountains. In conclusion, we examine the astronomic factors affecting global climate change on the Earth and explore the physical processes that explain why the Earth’s surface warms up and cools down over time.
