Abstract
This chapter aims to explore the affective-emotional learning generated by expressive art therapy in patients with advanced chronic cancer. For this, a comprehensive exploratory case study was carried out with a qualitative orientation and a cross-sectional scope. Two patients from the oncology department of a public hospital in Santiago de Chile participated, who were selected through an intentional non-probabilistic strategy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted after their participation in expressive art therapy. Finally, the audio recordings were transcribed into text and analyzed through the grounded theory strategy (Glaser and Strauss, The discovery of grounded theory. Aldine Press, 1967). The results showed that group expressive art therapy benefits self-acceptance, positive relationships, life purpose, personal growth, mastery of the environment, and autonomy. It is concluded that an expressive art therapeutic strategy generates a learning of affective-emotional tools to experience life and history with greater psychological well-being. Expressive art therapy generates self-compassionate affective learning that increases the psychological well-being of patients in terminal states of illness.
