ABSTRACT
Chapter 6 focuses on human rights. Not a day goes by without news of human rights abuses. There is a growing awareness that company products and services might be tainted by human rights abuses of workers in the supply chain. In addition, the horrors of human trafficking continue unabated in cities in which we live and work. Cybersecurity attacks threaten companies and consumers. For individual consumers, common cyber-related crimes include identity theft, frauds, and scams. Breaches involve invasions of personal health information, stolen or compromised credentials, and ransomware attacks. Furthermore, the spread of misinformation on the Internet related to COVID has cost lives, and the Internet has proven to be a dangerous platform to spread hate and incite violence. Many of the challenges are system-wide, so some companies join coalitions to drive progress. By collaborating with each other and NGOs, they are becoming potent players in addressing human rights abuses. Humanitarian interests alone would seem to be sufficient to motivate companies to protect human rights. Increasingly, as well, companies are sensitive to matters that concern customers, employees, investors, and regulators. Businesses are learning that doing the right thing benefits their bottom lines by protecting and building their brands, reducing financial and regulatory risks, elevating employee morale and loyalty, and attracting responsible investors.
