Acute Care Surgery in Geriatric Patients

Abstract

Appendicitis is one of the most common acute abdominal conditions in all age groups, including elderly. The signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis can be more subtle in elderly; hence, high index of suspicion is required to make the diagnosis. Morbidity and mortality of appendicitis are higher in elderly patients, especially ones with complicated appendicitis. To date, appendectomy is still a standard treatment of acute appendicitis, and it should be done in a timely fashion to prevent perforation and other morbidities.
