Abstract

The hundreds of simultaneously occurring biochemcial reactions in a microbial cell are ordered into catabolic and anabolic pathways based on their cellular functions. The fluxes of metabolites and intermediates between these major metabolic networks are coordinated and determine major traits of microbes. Natural selection shapes the allocation of the limited proteome space between catabolism and anabolism and can thereby explain physiological and metabolic features.
