Abstract
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an increasingly prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that commonly co-occurs with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This chapter provides an overview of ADHD in the context of ASD, including diagnostic criteria for ADHD, presentations of comorbid ADHD+ASD, and theories of ADHD+ASD comorbidity. The most commonly used assessment tools for ASD and ADHD are reviewed and guidance on selecting appropriate assessment tools for making a differential diagnosis is provided. Treatment considerations for comorbid ADHD+ASD are discussed, such as the reduced efficacy of stimulant medication and the need to provide more salient and immediate reinforcements for adaptive behaviors in the comorbid condition. Important future directions for the field of comorbid ADHD+ASD include a growing focus on the role of technology in assessment and treatment, school-based interventions, integrated primary care, and the presentation and treatment of comorbid ADHD+ASD in females.
