Intellectual Disabilities: Health and Social Care Across the Lifespan

Abstract

People with intellectual disability experience the same range of mental health issues and mental disorders as their non-intellectually disabled peers. The risk factors for develo** a mental disorder for both populations are the same; however, the person with intellectual disability can be more vulnerable to develo** mental disorders due to biological, psychological and social factors. If not identified, diagnosed and treated in a timely fashion, mental health issues and mental disorders can negatively impact the quality of life of the person with an intellectual disability. This chapter explores the concept of mental health and wellbeing for people with intellectual disabilities and its relationship with mental health disorders. It addresses issues pertaining to, the prevalence of and vulnerability to mental health disorders, diagnosis and approaches to assessing symptoms of mental health concerns, as well as access to mental health services and models of service provision that support the person with an intellectual disability who has a mental health condition. The presentation, diagnosis and therapeutic interventions associated with some of the most prevalent mental health disorders seen in people with intellectual disabilities is explored.
