Abstract

Nutrient pollution refers to overloading of aquatic environs by excessive influx of nutrients. Every creature has to taste death. The aging of surface waters is an inevitable fact. The life cycle of aquatic environs surpasses oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic, and dystrophic stage; each stage proceeds at a very slow rate (Ozturk et al. 2005). But due to anthropogenic intervention, the rate of aging of water body is accelerated by agricultural runoff, water-induced soil erosion, sewage dum**, excessive use of detergents and leakages from septic tanks, latrine, and kitchen wastes (Yucel et al. 1995; Cetin et al. 2000; Seker et al. 2006; Sakcali et al. 2009; Hakeem et al. 2011; Ozturk et al. 2011). Being highly enriched with nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous), sewage dum** is the noxious practice in various parts of the world. Influx of nutrient-loaded sewage or runoff contributes to nutrient enrichment of water bodies known as accelerated eutrophication. Accelerated eutrophication is also known as cultural eutrophication or anthropogenic eutrophication which results in proliferation of weeds and algal blooms (Fig. 9.1). The nutrient enrichment of water body causes deteriorated water quality due to synthetic as well as organic fertilizers, anoxic conditions, aluminum toxicity, and fecal matter-related diseases which negatively impact fish and other sensitive organisms including human beings. Each of the impacts of nutrient pollution is briefly discussed in this chapter.
