Benefits of Silicon in the Nutrition of Plants

Abstract

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial element for plants, which helps mitigate various biotic and abiotic stresses. Under similar conditions, plant species have different abilities to accumulate Si. As the benefits of Si are generally related to its amount absorbed, some plant species benefit more from Si fertilization compared to others. Thus, three modes of Si uptake were proposed: active, passive, and rejection. Two different types of Si transporter [Low Silicon 1 (Lsi1) and 2 (Lsi2)] involved in the uptake and distribution of Si have been identified. Lsi1 functions as an influx transporter for Si, whereas Lsi2 functions as an efflux transporter of Si. These transporters located in the plasma membrane and have different expression patterns and tissue or cellular locations in different plant species that are associated with different levels of Si accumulation. These and other aspects are presented in the chapter.
