Abstract

Parental substance use is known to severely impact offspring children, which constitutes a major public health concern. Adverse effects concern the child’s cognitive, motorical, social, and emotional development across different ages and developmental stages. The mechanisms of transgenerational transmission and other problematic developmental outcomes are complex and intertwined, including effects of prenatal substance exposure, genetic factors, and social aspects such as disruptive family patterns and dysfunctional parent child-interactions. Hence, this chapter outlines the environment and dynamics in families affected by substance use and parenting styles frequently present within these families. Developmental outcomes for affected children are discussed in terms of problematic substance use, mental health issues, and overall health behavior. In addition, protective factors for the children inherent to the family, the social environment, and the individual child are illustrated. As the impact of parental substance use on children calls for systematic approaches to enhance the developmental setting for children and the disruption of maladaptive cycles of transgenerational transmission, the chapter then focuses on effective, evidence-based interventions and preventive measures for both substance using parents and their children.
