Antimicrobial Research and One Health in Africa

Abstract

Currently, the world is battling the threat of microbial resistance to existing antimicrobial agents, resulting in overwhelming public health challenges. Response to antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, and antiviral agents such as nucleoside or non-nucleoside analogs and the outcome of viral infections in animals and humans are proposed to have links to some host’s and viral genetics, especially mutations in viral genomes, host’s immune response, and environmental challenges such as those created by climate change. This means that these factors may influence the successful treatment of patients with antimicrobial or antiviral therapy, or disease outcomes in any infected population. This chapter reviews the origin, mechanisms, and dynamics of viral resistance, its implications for therapy, its role in disease outcomes, and innovative ways to eliminate viral resistance preventing future outbreaks.
