Abstract

Cross-border communication is by no means an original phenomenon of our present time. Since the advent of the first newspapers in the early seventeenth century, journalism has crossed borders. And from the very beginning, the take-off of modern journalism in the second half of the nineteenth century also had a cross-border character. Despite the broad panorama of historical questions and research topics, cross-border perspectives have not yet played a major role in media history. This chapter aims at capturing some moments of the research development of the cross-border perspective in the course of media history and at illuminating essential dimensions (e.g., actors, contents, routines, structures) as well as the relevance of this perspective for future media history research.
