Abstract
This chapter deals with the two main forces that are responsible for changes in human emotion and emotional behavior across the life span: maturation and learning. After looking at several examples of each of these forces in action, the status of current theories in the development of emotion are examined. The results of several studies of children’s emotional language highlight the important role that language plays in emotion.
