Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Anesthetists: The Evolution of the Global Roles

Abstract

Ongoing advocacy and action over the past two decades have resulted in a broad and permissive scope of NP practice in New Zealand. As numbers of NPs rise, the potential of the NP role is being realized in national workforce policy, acknowledging the contribution NPs make to healthcare delivery, particularly in the face of burgeoning long-term conditions, health inequities and shortages of medical doctors. NPs provide a sustainable health workforce able to deliver meaningful, culturally safe and holistic care. This chapter describes the evolution of NPs in New Zealand, arguing that NPs are a critical resource for transforming the way primary healthcare is delivered.
