Abstract

Nanocerium oxide exhibits a unique autocatalytic activity by switching between the +3 and +4 oxidation states, which classify nanocerium as a nanozyme. Nanocerium has a pseudo-infinite half life, and can be regenerated. Nanocerium scavenges free radicals, and is an anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic. Nanocerium oxide potentially mimics the activity of natural anti-oxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase. Nanocerium oxide is used in fuel cell electrolytes and catalytic converters, and for ultraviolet absorption, nanomedicine, plant growth modulation, lens and photoreceptor repair, islet protection, cardiovascular repair, wound healing, bone repair, antimicrobial agent, sports and high altitude medicine, and contrasting agent in magnetic resonance imaging. In agriculture, nanocerium oxide allow the production of low-starch grain, a diet for diabetes, low sugar fruit and could increase the shelf life of stored seeds by preventing germination.
