Forest Politics from Below

Abstract

In Austria, Germany, France, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and Switzerland social movements and citizen initiatives engage, motivated by environmental grief, against the deforestation of local forests and for the conservation of valuable ecosystems. The ideologies, politics of emotions, policy preferences, and tactics of forest-related social movements in these countries will be outlined. I will furthermore analyze whether and how these movements refer to Eco-Solidarism or global climate justice.

Notes

  1. 1.

The official name of the region was zone d’aménagement différée (zone for future development).

  2. 2.

We can assume that in the German history there were forest and land occupations as forms of re-possessioning before the twentieth century but I restrict the argumentation to specific ecological oriented forms of protest.
