Abstract

Michael DeBakey, a participant in the Artificial Heart Program, was impressed by not only the thromboresistance but also the durability of General Atomic’s isotropic carbon. He was independently develo** a new aortic heart valve replacement. Going down this path was at odds with General Atomic’s corporate focus on nuclear energy business. DeBakey’s commanding personality was persuasive in moving forward with our new adventure. The first DeBakey-Surgitool valve was implanted in October 1968. One patient who had the DeBakey aortic valve prosthesis that had been implanted in 1972 needed a mitral valve replaced. The DeBakey prosthesis was functioning normally after 34 years and still providing good performance.
