Abstract
Kuczyńska examines the genesis of two plays in which Friel engaged extensively with the writings of Denis Donoghue: The Communication Cord (1982) and Wonderful Tennessee (1993). Using terminology derived from Friel’s archives, Kuczyńska suggests that a key component of the ‘how’ of Friel’s process involved the invention of a dramatic form that best expressed what he often called the ‘core’ of a given play. This framework is a useful means of assessing Friel’s successes and failures when attempting to incorporate secondary material into his work. In this way, Kuczyńska opens a window onto a vital part of Friel’s praxis whilst recovering a significant source for his work.
