Abstract

The author comments on the chapters authored by Monica Rebecca Ferrari Nunes, Joana Barros, Juliana Ventura de Souza Fernandes, and Philippe Denis. She argues that unforeseen situations during an investigation are not necessarily negative. Instead, they force changes in the original plans and, ultimately, put into question the viability of adopting a single method in the social and human sciences. Suggesting that the unexpected must actually be expected in research types involving orality and participation, she concludes that surprises are constitutive of the oral history practice.
