Abstract
This chapter addresses normal imaging features and relevant pathologies of the neonatal musculoskeletal tract. Craniosynostosis is discussed including practical advice for suture ultrasound. Palpable and/or visible head neck lesions are presented with typical imaging appearance and relevant differential diagnoses. The importance of early diagnosis of neonatal osteomyelitis—as a severe bone and soft tissue infection with frequent long-term sequelae—is highlighted. Also in this chapter, the role of muscle ultrasound in floppy infants is addressed. Indications and acquisition of neonatal skeletal surveys are critically reviewed based on the literature. In the last part, congenital malformations of the spine and extremities are discussed with a focus on neonatal appearance and the role of imaging.
